VLC Is Going Universal - To Rock Your iPhone [Update: It's Out!]

October 24, 2010
We've told you all about apps that allow you to view natively unsupported video content on your iDevice. These arrived on the iPad a little while ago, and they are now making their way to our 3.5 inch iDevices. CineXPlayer, is already available and now it's VLC's turn to come to our iPhones. Still being reviewed by Apple, the universal version of VLC will allow you to read all your: DivX, Xvids, Flash video files and more, on your iPhone 4 and 3GS without the need for prior conversion. I just tried it on my iPhone for a couple of days, and let me tell you, it works really great. In just a couple of seconds, you can have almost any of the videos you found online playing right on your device by transferring them directly through iTunes. Even better, thanks to iOS 4, you can send DivX and FLV files you found online (in Mobile Safari) directly to VLC for playback using the "open in" feature. VLC supports the Retina display as well, so these will look really great if they're of good quality. Lastly, and just in case all of this isn't enough, VLC for iPhone is not a separate app, it's actually the iPad version that's becoming universal. And, it will also be available for free. As usual, we'll tell you as soon as it's out. ***Update: The Universal version of the iOS VLC Media Player is now available to download on the App Store. So go check it out.
