How To Set Up Free Find My iPhone On Older iDevices

November 22, 2010
Apple just announced that the great MobileMe feature, Find My iPhone, will be available free for non-MobileMe subscribers to use. And, while you do need a fourth generation device to activate the service, this doesn't mean the free Find My iPhone feature won't work on older iDevices. As Apple notes:
Create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries.
Importantly, you only need to set up your free Find My iPhone account on a fourth generation device - such as an iPhone 4, iPad, or the new iPod touch. However, once you've done this, simply use your Apple ID and password with an older device running iOS 4.2 to enable Find My iPhone for free. If you've got a friend who owns a fourth generation device, use their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to set up your own account - then type your Apple ID and password into your own handset. According to Apple, this should work like a charm. For information on how to create your free Find My iPhone account, check out the relevant page over at Apple.com.
