Verizon Special Media Event Today: The Verizon iPhone Cometh

January 11, 2011
Today, Verizon is holding a "special media event" in New York. Many of us are expecting the carrier to announce the Verizon iPhone at the event. For a while now, rumors of a Verizon iPhone have been circulating around the Web. These came to a head last week, when Verizon sent out a round of invitations inviting Apple reporters to a Verizon event in NYC. Following this, The Wall Street Journal published an article confirming that Verizon will be announcing the Verizon iPhone at the aforementioned event. And, to make things even better, All Things Digital claims that "barring any unforeseen circumstances,” Steve Jobs will be on stage at the Verizon special event. Here's when the event is scheduled to begin:
  • 08:00 - PST (Pacific)
  • 11:00 - EST (Eastern)
  • 16:00 - GMT (London, Dublin)
  • 01:00 (January 12) - Tokyo
  • 03:00 (January 12) - Sydney
Yesterday, AT&T PR boss Larry Solomon commented on Verizon carrying the iPhone, stating:
The iPhone is built for speed, but that’s not what you get with a CDMA phone. I’m not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane.
Following this, the WSJ commented on the matter, stating that Verizon is "confident" it can carry the iPhone, and that the network will offer "unlimited data-use plans when it starts selling the iPhone." However, Verizon iPhone owners will not be able to surf the Web or check e-mail while on a call. This is because Verizon’s CMDA network does not permit the use of data and voice at the same time. What do you think? We'll be reporting on the event when the time comes, so be sure to check back with us for news on the Verizon iPhone later today.
