Apple Responds To Sony's Allegations - Clarifies In-App Purchasing Rules

February 1, 2011
A little while ago, Apple responded to this morning's allegations from Sony about changing their stance on in-app purchases, rejecting Sony's app and potentially pushing Amazon out of the ecosystem. According to Apple, nothing has changed:
We have not changed our developer terms or guidelines. We are now requiring that if an app offers customers the ability to purchase books outside of the app, that the same option is also available to customers from within the app with in-app purchase.
As you may have noticed, this is quite contradictory. So far, Apple has forced all apps to use their payment system, with a few exceptions like e-book platforms and online retailers. This move could mean that in the future, every app will have to offer users a way to use their iTunes account to process payments. The developer probably being free to have the user pay the difference (Apple's 30 percent cut) if they prefer to pay through iTunes. This is good news. Not only will all platforms most likely adhere to the principle, but it also makes Apple look good, as they're not forcing their cut down everyone's throat. Everyone's happy, end of story.
