Apple Digital AV Adapter Supports iPhone 4, iPod Touch (4G), And iPad

March 3, 2011
Interestingly, the Apple Digital AV Adapter Steve Jobs announced on stage yesterday is compatible with more than just the iPad 2. In fact, once the accessory becomes available, you'll be able to use it with your iPhone 4, iPod touch (4G), and both the iPad and iPad 2. The accessory will retail for $39, and will allow user to hook up their iDevice to an HDTV. Once connected, Apple fans will be able to display movies and images on their HDTV in high definition. In fact, your HDTV will display everything you can see on your iDevice's screen. The iPhone 4, iPod touch (4G), and first generation iPad will be able to "screen mirror" at 720p. However, the iPad 2 increases this slightly, and allows screen mirroring of up to 1080p (unfortunately, movie output is still limited to 720p even for the iPad 2).
The Apple Digital AV Adapter mirrors exactly what you see on iPad 2 so that everyone in the room can enjoy it on your widescreen TV, video projection screen, or other HDMI-compatible display.
You connect your iDevice to the Digital AV Adapter using a 30 pin dock connector. However, you can also connect a second 30 pin connecter to the adapter, and charge your iDevice while it's connected to your HDTV. At the online Apple Store, the adapter is listed as "coming soon." We'll keep you posted. [Image credit: Engadget] ***Update: We're hearing the plug might only allow mirroring on the newer iPad 2. We'll investigate.
