Letdown: No MobileMe Refresh, And It's Still $99

March 2, 2011
In a move that could have stymied the competition and brought with it a boatload of new subscribers, Apple failed to announce its MobileMe service would now be free and greatly enhanced. This was a long standing rumor that many of us expected to become reality at today's iPad 2 event. Apple’s MobileMe allows users to seamlessly sync files across different devices. Users also receive an @me.com email account. When it was released as .Mac in 2000, it was considered by many to be ahead of its time. This was mainly due to the fact competitors hadn’t yet developed similar services. In recent years, the service has often been criticized. This stemmed from a poor 2008 re-launch, when .Mac was renamed MobileMe, along with its $99 per year subscription fee. By this point, Google, Microsoft, and other competitors had begun offering similar programs for free. In December 2010, Apple CEO Steve Jobs all but confirmed his company’s concerns about MobileMe and hinted at a future refresh. Unfortunately, that didn't happen today. What do you think?
