Backing Up iDevices Without Needing iTunes (How-To)

April 11, 2011

Backing up data from your iDevice wirelessly and automatically is now possible, following directions published by Life Hacker. The instructions can replace the syncing procedure between an iPhone/iPod touch or iPad with iTunes.

As wonderful as iDevices are, they must talk to a computer’s iTunes application to perform key tasks. These include syncing and backing up data, as well as restoring an iDevice when something goes wrong. Finally, when Apple releases new iOS updates, this too requires a connection of the iPhone or iPad to iTunes.

Although Life Hacker’s directions do not completely eliminate the need to sync, it gets darn close. It helps you back up everything on the iDevice wirelessly using Dropbox. Best of all, it may be performed according to a schedule you set.

To get started, you need to jailbreak your iDevice, setup a Dropbox account, and purchase and download PKGBackup ($8) from the Cydia store on your iDevice.
From there, prepare to be amazed.

The directions look easy to follow, and for $8, will be worth it for many users.
