Facebook App Updated With The Long-Awaited Unfriend Ability And More

April 4, 2011
The Facebook for iOS app has finally been updated with some features that users have been requesting for quite some time. One of the three new features of v3.4 is the ability to unfriend a person, therefore, no longer allowing them access to certain private information and no more skipping past their wall posts. Unfriending a person isn't an action needed to be taken often -- or so I would hope -- but many of us would consider it a basic function that should have been included much sooner. To unfriend an individual, go to the Friends area of the app, tap on the person you're looking to unfriend, then tap on the action button in the top-right, and now you'll see the red Unfriend button near the bottom of the list. Unfortunately, this new ability doesn't appear to include fan pages, like celebrities and companies. The second new feature introduced with Facebook v3.4 is Event check-in. Although we can already advise friends that we are currently at a specific location, Event check-ins offer convenience to alert guests and hosts that you're attending the actual event -- a nice option for large locations and those that provide multiple services and areas. As a final addition to today's update, Facebook has a better implementation of Google Maps for Places. Tapping on a Places check-in now provides a map preview at the top of the entry, allowing you to tap the preview to jump to the full map user interface. Not only does this give a quicker view of the location, but also offers one less step to get directions. General enhancements to Facebook v3.4 include: • Improved News Feed • Improved notifications UI Facebook is designed for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later, and available as a free download in the App Store.
