Study On The Go With mMarkup

mMarkup ($4.99) by Mark Johannessen Consulting is a convenient productivity app, designed to allow users to read and mark PDF documents on the go. Instead of having to lug around papers and notebooks, everything can be accessed from an iPad.

mMarkup has many features, but they are a bit difficult to use; it takes a while to become familiar with them. I recommend taking 5 minutes to read the introduction before attempting to use the app.

The app has two main views, document and notepad. The document view shows users the document open and allows them to see a list of all PDFs. The notepad view lets users jot down notes that correspond to a PDF. Each Markup file comes with its own notepad.

In the document view users can highlight text and add Bookmarks/Stickies to the document. There is also an option to see thumbnails of all the pages in the document. The highlighting function is easy to use but it is sometimes hard to highlight the text you want. Some practice is required to avoid highlighting unwanted words.

The bookmarks feature is the easiest to use. Users tap and hold the right margin of the screen and a box will appear prompting users to enter a name for the bookmark. After bookmarks are added, they can be viewed from the BM option in document view. Clicking on the –BM option will delete all bookmarks on a page.

The Stickies function allows for notes to be written next to information in the document. After finishing the Sticky, it is minimized and found on the left margin of the screen. This may seem like a good feature, but it is actuality quite frustrating. Text on Stickies cannot be retrieved, and tapping on a Sticky does not open it. Rather, it takes users to the previous page (since swiping to the left/right scrolls to the next page).

Overall mMarkup is a good idea in theory but in reality lacks user friendliness. Sometimes over complicated apps take away from what they have to offer, this is an example of that. Even though the app has nice features, for $4.99 there are better deals in the App Store.
