Westminster Abbey Releasing 3D App Ahead Of Next Week's Royal Wedding

April 18, 2011
Westminster Abbey, site of next week’s royal wedding in London, is releasing a new app just in time for the worldwide media event. Abbey 3D, which should soon be released in the App Store, will give users “intimate access to the royal church,” according to a press release. Abbey 3D, priced at £2.99, gives users a virtual tour of where the April 29 ceremony uniting Prince William and Catherine Middleton will be held, including an internal scaled replica of Westminster Abbey that uses the “latest laser scanning technology.” Another feature is a section on the Great West Door, the spot where Middleton will start her walk down the aisle with her father to the High Altar, as well as information on the Grave of the Unknown Warrior. According to the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster:
"William Caxton set up the first printing press in England on the Abbey's doorstep in 1476 so it seems very apt in our fast moving world of communications that we are releasing Abbey 3D for the first royal wedding of the 21st century."

Known as the House of Kings, Westminster Abbey is the final resting place for monarchs and has been the setting for Coronations since William the Conqueror in 1066. It has also witnessed numerous other royal occasions such as weddings and funerals. App sales will be split evenly between the Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton Charitable Gift Fund and Westminster Abbey Foundation, which is responsible for the care and upkeep of the Abbey.
