iCard for iPhone – Holiday Cards Available to Design, Share, and Print! ($0.99) by BRIAN Burke is a card creation app dedicated to giving you the tools you need to effectively recognize that birthday or special event. It includes hundreds of handmade templates, icons and 65 original patterns.
Since the days of the hamster dance email, electronic messaging has evolved to include pictures, video and even songs. It has surpassed paper cards as the method of sharing congratulations or other good wishes. This is not to say that forwarding that birthday email you got last year, to your aunt this year, isn’t tacky, but e-cards have long since become accepted (at least in some circles) as replacements for paper cards.
While iCard Pro isn’t a new idea, it is one of the latest in the “Big Boy” e-card crowd for iOS. It is designed to fit any occasion including birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Hanukkah and Mother’s Day.
You begin by choosing a template. You can either choose a handmade card, pattern or photo from your camera or camera roll. Once you have made this decision, you can decide what type of fold you are going to use; face only, two sided or open card.
From this point you move to the creation part of the process. Add some icons or text, draw on the card and edit the different elements to get the look you want.
Variety is the strength of iCard Pro. Not only are there the aforementioned different options to choose from, but you can also get ideas from other users who have uploaded their works. And, when you are satisfied with your card, you can save it to the camera roll, email it or upload it to Twitter, Facebook or the online gallery.
While there is a plethora of tools to assist you in this scrapbook-like endeavor, the process isn’t super user friendly. Load times are rather slow, getting the font you want is a headache, and there are some simple tools such as cut-and-paste, undo and redo that are no-shows.
The iCard Pro app is feature packed and powerful; it can help you express your creativity and make someone’s day. However, the unfinished feel and price make it difficult to recommend this over some of the cheaper options.
If you aren’t sure if this app is for you, you can also try the lower priced iCard and iCard lite.
