Mighty Fin ($0.99) by Launching Pad Games Mighty Fin is a simple arcade game for your iPhone or iPod Touch.
You are a working fish named Fin, and you need a vacation. So you sign up for Shady Sal’s “Round the World Tour.” the only thing is that this tour is so cheap, it’s suspicious. Dangerous, even. So what is a fish to do? Make the best of it!
As Fin, you’ll have to navigate your way through treacherous obstacles and other ocean creatures that want to eat you for lunch!
The controls are simple – just tap the screen when you want to dive. Releasing your finger will have Fin go upwards and jump out of the water, so you have to use diving and jumping in combination to survive. if you crash or get eaten, you’ll have to restart the level or go back to the main menu.
Along the way, you’ll find bubbles to collect. These will boost your total score for the level and collection many of them consecutively will boost the multiplier. Dive and jump to collect as many of them as you can.
Shady Sal can give Fin costumes as well. However, to get costumes, you will have to find them along your journey. Costumes will be in very large bubbles in random spots on each level, so you’ll have to do your best to collect them all. These costumes can be accessed by going to the “Costumes” option, accessible in-between levels and from the main menu. There are 26 costumes to collect, so the hunt for them can take a good chunk of time.
When you play, you’ll have to go through each level. Doing so will get you a medal for the level depending on your score. Completing a level will also unlock “Endless” mode for it as well. This will allow you to replay a specific level to your heart’s content.
There is Game Center integration for high scores, but no achievements yet. I hope that the developers can spice things up by adding achievements in the future.
While this game may seem similar to Tiny Wings, I found it a bit more fun because of the challenges during your journey, and the costumes make things fun.
The graphics are simply stunning. The levels are very detailed, menus look great, and it’s all Retina Display optimized.
On the first launch, you’ll get a screen that says “Unpacking some files.” This can take a moment, but it only occurs on the first launch. Once that’s done, you’ll never see it again! That is, if you don’t delete and re-install the app. Nothing major, but just a small heads-up.
However, there are currently only eight levels. While the game can become difficult in mastering Fin across the dangerous seas, once you beat the eight levels, there are no more levels for now. You will be able to play Endless mode on all the levels, but that doesn’t bring any new content to the game. At most, this game may take some people about 30 minutes to beat. So I hope the developers will be constantly updating and adding more content to this great little gem.
Despite the rather short length, this is still a definite must-buy if your a fan of this type of game.
