Pick a Piggy HD ($2.99) by Dynamic Pixels is a charming physics-based puzzle game that kids and adults of all ages will love to play.

Pong, the little pig who stars in this game, dreams of escaping from the dirty, dusty basement to explore the world. Your goal is to help her catapult through the maze-like levels of the house, until she reaches sweet freedom.

Like most pigs, Pong doesn’t have arms, so the only way for her to progress through the house is by bouncing off various objects to climb higher and higher. You control Pong with a finger. Drag your finger along the screen to choose her trajectory and speed, then release to watch her fly through the air.

Each level has several wooden platforms for Pong to use as stepping stones. Bounce from each one to climb higher, until you reach the hole at the top of the screen. On your journey, make sure to gather the three stars that are placed in every level, as they will unlock additional areas in the game.

Of course, escape isn’t as simple as just jumping from plank to plank. There are plenty of obstacles in the way, from spider’s webs, rats and electric shocks that must be avoided, to trap doors, buttons, and levers that must be activated in different ways.

Use special buttons to bounce ultra high in some levels, and eat mushroom power-ups to split Pong into several smaller pigs that bounce through the level to reach hard to access areas.

The controls are simple to master, but overcoming some of the more complicated enemies and obstacles can be a serious test of skill and strategy. With five distinct areas and 100 levels, it will take time and patience to finish the game and set Pong free. There is definitely plenty of gameplay to be had in Pick a Piggy HD.

If you make a mistake during a level, there’s a quick restart button, and if a level gets too tough, try the skip a level function to avoid frustration. However, you can’t skip too many levels because you need a set number of stars to progress to the next area. There’s also an in-app purchase that will reveal Pong’s trajectory for easier navigation, which may be a good option to help younger children play the game.

Pick a Piggy HD features full Game Center integration, with 21 achievements plus leaderboards.

I loved Pick a Piggy HD, thanks to the adorable characters and their silly animations. The graphics are well done, and this game is a visual treat. The characters are polished, backgrounds are complex, and everything is colorful and fun.

Some of the levels were simple, but others required a lot of experimentation and skill to aim properly. I thought that it was adequately challenging without being too easy or too hard, for the most part.

Thanks to the lack of a time limit, this is a relaxed, casual game that’s suitable for a wide range of game lovers. At just $2.99, Pick a Piggy HD is a great option if you like physics-based strategy games. There’s also an iPhone version available for $.99, and a lite version available for free.

So give it a download and help sweet little Pong out of that dreary basement.
