iLearn - Animals ($2.99) by Dino Lupo is a clever new app that teaches very young children the sounds that animals make. This app reminds me of a toy I had as a little girl. You would pull a string, and an arrow would land on a picture of a cow, and you would hear, “Mooooo”. iLearn - Animals is the same idea.

Open the app, and the home screen offers three choices: Hear, Play, and Look. You also have the option to turn off the music here. Tap “Hear” and you’ll see pictures of nine animals. Tap the arrows to access the next page of pictures; there are three pages, 27 animals in all. Tap on an animal’s picture to hear the sound it makes. The sounds are quite realistic, better than the sounds on the toy from my youth.

Go back to the home screen, and tap “Play” to access a little quiz game. Press to listen, and you will hear an animal sound and see three animal pictures. Choose the correct animal and you’ll get an “Oh, yay!”. Choose the incorrect animal and you’ll hear crying sounds.

Now head back to the home screen and tap “Look”. You’ll be asked to rotate your iPad, and you’ll see photos of a dozen different animals for your perusal. This is the only place you’ll see the names of the animals written out. I would like to see the names of the animals more prominently featured throughout the app, both in written form and in the audio portion.

Still, this is a nice app for the very youngest iPad users. If you’ve been looking for iPad apps for your toddler, this is one that teaches as it entertains. Of course, I wouldn’t recommend just handing your iPad over to your very little one, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is keeping your expensive device intact. For the full educational experience, this app is best used by parent and child together, so you can discuss the names of the animals to go along with their pictures and sounds.

We’ve teamed with the developer to offer ten codes to give away. Please note, this is an iPad-only app! If you’d like a chance to win, simply retweet this article and/or leave a comment below. You may enter up to twice (once each way). Contest ends on August 12, 9:00 a.m. EDT. Good luck!
