Anniversaries Matter As Symbolic Day Approaches For Apple

September 13, 2011
In the wake of this past weekend's many worldwide memorial services, we're reminded of the innate ritualistic importance such periodic remembrances play in the heart and soul of the human experience. Tragedies, comedies, birthdays, weddings, and millions more events good and bad are recalled and revisited as we work -- sometimes flying, sometimes fumbling -- through the course of our fleeting lives. And just as we reflect on various events of personal or cultural import, larger collectives -- companies and corporations and the like -- traditionally follow suit, publicly acknowledging past successes with new products launched around meaningful commercial anniversaries. Naturally, Apple is (probably) no exception. Much of Apple's immediate future -- from the launch of its newest iPhone to the questioned continuation of its popular iPod line -- has been speculated upon, and potential answers remain shrouded in the fog of rumor's confusion. We've seen proposed windows for Apple's anticipated reveals come and go, and we're approaching a new round of supposed marker dates. Eventually, after all, everyone's bound to get it right. But, while most pundits are pushing October 7 or October 14 as probable launch dates (both of which are reasonably believable), I'd like to submit my own prediction for the new iDevice pair's official market avaiability: October 5. Keep in mind, we've seen no tips about this, and my assertion to follow should not be viewed as another secret whisper for the hungry, hungry rumor mill. Instead, that specific day simply reflects my belief that Apple will honor itself and its products in some meaningful way come early next month. Why? 2011 is a significant year for the Cupertino company. 10 years ago, Apple introduced the iPod, rescuing its faltering brand in the very process of innovating its way to the industry-defining iPhone. Coincidentally, 2011 also happens to be that same iPhone's fifth "iterative" birthday. 10 and five, see? October 5! That said, the iPod's diamond day doesn't officially kick in 'til November, and there's no guarantee Apple even cares enough about the (ultimately arbitrary) date to begin with. Still, I personally feel they'll do something special on that particular Wednesday; and, since it more or less lines up with the (now-)expected launch of the heavily anticipated iPhone 5, why shouldn't they bring out the duo right then? Makes sense to me. So mark your calendars "10/5," folks. Remember, 10/5. Got it? 10-4. [Thanks to commenter Andy for planting the seed.]
