Jailbreak Only: SemiTether Gets An Update - Now More Stable

October 31, 2011
The "SemiTether" jailbreak tweak that allows users to reboot their jailbroken iOS device without connecting to a computer has recently been updated. Now, the package is more stable and can patch Safari to work in the non-jailbreak reboot mode. Here's a summary of changes, provided by BigBoss:
  1. Much more stable with new mobile substrate
  2. Can patch safari so it works in the non-jailbreak reboot mode
  3. App to monitor the status of your semitether and reapply. Check after cydia installs.
For those of you who aren't too familiar with the iOS jailbreak scene, SemiTether is an important jailbreak tweak because, as mentioned, it allows users to reboot a tethered jailbroken iOS device without having to connect it to a computer. Currently, the only jailbreak solution available for iOS 5 devices is tethered - meaning that without the SemiTether tweak, users have to "tether" their iOS device to a computer and boot it via redsn0w whenever the mobile device powers off. However, with SemiTether, jailbreak fans can reboot their iOS device without having to hook-up to a computer and use the redsn0w jailbreak tool. There is a downside - namely, that certain iOS apps will not work following the SemiTether reboot. These include Mail and jailbreak apps like Cydia. But the good news is that Safari, which used to crash following the SemiTether reboot, has now been patched in the latest version of the package and runs fine following the non-tethered reboot. The developer is looking into patching the Mail app, too. For information on jailbreaking your iOS 5 device and installing SemiTether, take a look at our detailed how-to article. The updated version of SemiTether is now available to download in Cydia.
