We already knew that the 2011 year-end holidays saw numerous records broken in the world of mobile devices and downloads, but now we’ve actually got some specific figures from the Angry Birds crew at Rovio. As the top app–or, in this case, series of apps–on iTunes over the last few years, Angry Birds shattered its own single-day mark with 6.5 million downloads this past Christmas. True, those 6.5 million downloads include free and paid versions of all three games in the series (Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio), but it’s still an impressive haul, representing a 325 percent increase year-over-year for the day.

Unbelievably, the franchise, while long in the tooth, seems far from burning out its global popularity. Says Rovio’s Ville Heijari (via AllThingsD),

We’re really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays — we have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and can’t wait to introduce them to the public.

Hopefully, those upcoming releases will include a new IP–and IPO!
