PhotoNova ($0.99) by Dyrmishi Loran is a photo effects app that lets you use various marquee edits to add enhancements to specific sections of a photo. Choose from over 60 preexisting effects, or create your own with overlays.

Users can either choose a photo from their iPhone/iPod touch’s camera roll or take a picture from within the app. The next step is to select a certain area or object to single out for adding effects. Choose from photo editing tools such as the lasso, or circle and rectangle marquee to mark off the area to alter. Once the lasso or marquee is drawn, use the effects to create a variety of interesting versions of the original photo.

PhotoNova’s effects are much like those that come with other image editing apps, but the lasso and marquee tools are not as common. Being able to select and change the look of one specific object with just a click is a nice feature to have.

Unfortunately, this app is difficult to use, lags when moving around and crashes. Sometimes I was unable to select a specific effect. Other times, when one effect was selected, the one next to it would show up instead. There is no erase feature, only an undo button. There is no way of reverting back to the original image in order to start over without hitting the “undo” button over and over again. Sometimes, that doesn’t even work.

Overall, this app has the potential to become a must-have for iPhone photographers, but not until the developers clean up the bugs and add some features to make it easier to work with. The good news is that it is only $0.99. If you want to see if I am overreacting to its issues, pick it up in the App Store.
