George Harrison's Famous Guitars Take The Spotlight

February 23, 2012
An iPad app showcasing the vintage guitars owned by George Harrison was released today in the App Store. The Guitar Collection: George Harrison is a modern tribute to the lead guitarist of the Beatles. The app was developed by Bandwdth Publishing in close collaboration with the legendary musician's only child, Dhani Harrison. "Paintings should be in museums and should be able to be seen. Instruments should have to be played every once in a while. Otherwise they’ll perish,” says the younger Harrison in a recent article in the New York Times. And since the idea of letting others play his father's prized instruments is unfeasible, to say the least, he has proceeded with the next best thing: an interactive iPad app. The app offers a virtual tour of George Harrison's enviable guitar collection, and this is made possible with the meticulous 360° photography done by Steven Sebring. Only seven of Harrison's guitars are initially featured, but future updates are said to introduce the others. The app also comes with a built-in player that plays full tracks of the Beatles songs that are already in your music library, while playing only excerpts of those that aren't. Videos and other exclusive content are also included in the app. The Guitar Collection: George Harrison is available in the App Store for $9.99. Between this and the recent announcement of the availability of the Beatles songs as exclusive iTunes ringtones, it seems that there's no foreseeable end to this multimedia invasion being carried out by Steve Jobs' favorite band.
