Google's OS Might Claim The Volume Crown, But Apple Commands 3/4 Of Industry Profits

February 6, 2012
Top industry analyst Horace Dediu of Asymco has put together a series of telling graphics that highlight Apple's meteoric rise to global smartphone dominance. His report dissecting the subject is fairly light, but that's because the following charts are so self-explanatory. In a nutshell, they show that, while Apple accounts for just nine percent of total smartphone units sold worldwide, the iPhone commands a whopping 75 percent of all industry profits. Wow! Keep in mind, as Daniel Eran Dilger of AppleInsider reminds us,
The figures only look at profits for the top phone makers that report their earnings; other phone makers, including ZTE and Huawei, aren't figured into the profit share figures. Given the cutthroat competition in the mobile industry, figures from these and other smaller manufactures would likely reduce Apple's unit share figures but may possibly have little to no impact on its profit share.
It might seem like Apple's reached the apex and has nowhere to go but down, but that's not at all the case. With more and more international carriers still in the process of adding the iPhone to their lineups, Apple indeed has greater heights to conquer, and we suspect its revenue and profit shares will continue to climb in the months and years ahead.
