Galactic Alliance 2 Looks To Freshen Up The Tower Defense Genre

March 26, 2012
Tower defense titles are a dime a dozen in the App Store, so the release of yet another one may not seem like a newsworthy story. Developer Vectorform, however, is hoping the unique features of their latest title can bring something new to the genre. Vectorform has just released Galactic Alliance 2 ($1.99) for the iPad, which they believe delivers more than your average tower defense game. A short HD game trailer is available, below, to give you an idea of what to expect from Galactic Alliance 2: So what unique qualities does Galactic Alliance 2 offer I hear you ask? For starters Vectorform claims Galactic Alliance is the only tower defense title to offer four player, cooperative play. Tower defense games usually involve setting up your defenses and then watching the game play out in front of you, with an occasional upgrade or repair thrown in to spice things up. The inclusion of cooperative play sounds like this may be a lot more interesting to play.

Galactic Alliance 2 also features (from the App Store description):
  • Retina graphics
  • Game Center integration
  • 4 player game play
  • 5 maps, each offering unique challenges
  • 7 enemy types
  • 8 tower types
  • Push next wave option
  • Help screen with tips
The fact we are now seeing games launching with Retina graphics is very nice as well, though I'm not sure even beautiful graphics can draw me back into a tower defense game for too long anymore. However, Galactic Alliance 2 is certainly one of the better examples out there. How do you feel about tower defense games? Does Galactic Alliance 2, with its cooperative play, bring enough to the table to keep the genre fresh?
