When it comes to weather apps, there are two main categories. On the one side, you have those packed with every feature possibly, and the other group is about simplicity and visual beauty. I’ve seen some spectacular looking weather apps over the years, though McLean Mobile‘s latest entry, Weather 2x, is definitely worth a closer look.
Falling within the simple and decorative category, Weather 2x displays the essential weather data and forecasts accompanied by stunning visual imagery optimized for the third generation iPad’s Retina display. You can keep Weather 2x on your night stand, especially for easy viewing in the morning and before going to sleep, or otherwise integrate into your decor for quick reference.
Weather 2x provides current conditions with a relevant photo depiction, the five day forecast, and a breakdown of every three hours, plus allows multiple location bookmarking. Available with a single tap, you can toggle the sky condition, such as “Cloudy” or “Light Rain,” to show daily accumulated precipitation, visibility, chance of future precipitation, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction.
I’ve already mentioned the single tap gesture, but that’s only the beginning of the experience. When using Weather 2x, think of the weather photo as if it were a panel. Swipe your finger to the left to reveal the daily forecast breakdown and swipe to the right to open the locations gallery. To show or hide the five day forecast, just double tap or perform the two finger expand gesture anywhere on the screen.
My final comments deal with clock display. As you’ve probably noticed, Weather 2x doesn’t have a built-in clock like many other visually focused weather apps. Indeed, McLean has taken a different approach, leaving the status bar in view. Not only does this provide the current time, but it also offers access to your iPad’s battery level and network connection status.
Weather 2x is compatible with iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, and available in the App Store for $1.99. Although, read on to find out how you could get a copy for absolutely free.
