Cabbits Are On The Loose In Carota!

Carota! ($1.99) by Matthew Herz is deceptively difficult for how simple it looks. The story focuses on Thaddeus the Cabbit.

“What is a ‘cabbit?’” you may ask. Well, it’s not quite a cat and not quite a rabbit, but it sure does have a sweet tooth for carrots.

Though Thaddeus has let hubris be his downfall as he tries to steal a carrot from an old lady’s garden. She finds him, beats him to death, and drops him in the convenient empty grave she just happened to have in her garden.

Thaddeus finds himself in hell. With your help, there is a chance for him to be redeemed. You’ll need to guide him through 50 puzzling levels so he can make it back to the mortal world.

Each level features floor tiles hovering over a dark abyss, with a golden gate on the wall for your exit point. The floor tiles have paths on them that Thaddeus will follow. Double tap the tiles to rotate them, and swipe in any direction to move them. The object is to get Thaddeus to the gate by creating a path with the tiles.

Easier said than done.

With open paths on the tiles, you may think that the primary concern is Thaddeus just walking straight off of them. Luckily, he’ll turn around if he hits the tile’s edge. Unluckily, the tile disappears after a set amount of time. This, as it turns out, is where the challenge comes in.

I’ll admit that it took me at least 10 tries to clear the second level. Once I got the hang of how the tiles and Thaddeus’ movement worked, the game became slightly easier.

Slightly.

No matter how good you become at navigating Thaddeus, you're still up against the clock, and any mistakes could cost you.

Emulating Super Nintendo’s 16 bit graphics, the game looks as if it was made in the 90s. The soundtrack also does the game justice.

Overall, the aesthetics and humor of this app make it a great game. However, you may want to avoid this one if you’re not up for a challenge.

The faint of heart may just end up in gaming hell along with Thaddeus.
