AppAdvice App Of The Week For May 25, 2012

May 25, 2012

Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past seven days that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!

Diet Coda

This week, our pick is for everyone that has a website they need to manage. Panic, the developers of the popular coding text editor Coda, have finally released Diet Coda for iPad (and Coda 2 for Mac). This app will push the boundaries of content creation, as you can finally manage your website without the need for a computer.

Diet Coda features a beautiful looking interface that makes editing your site a breeze with the efficient sidebar. The app supports code folding and even autocompletion of custom variables and other functions. There is even a “focus” feature that is similar to what is found in iA Writer, so you can really concentrate on what your site needs.

The app is Retina ready for your new iPad and even includes iCloud sync, to correspond with Coda 2, which also has iCloud sync. There is also the AirPreview feature in Diet Coda, which is basically AirPlay for coding.

Coders and website owners everywhere shall rejoice with the release of Diet Coda on iPad. If you have to manage a site, then you definitely need this app.

Please be aware that Diet Coda requires the use of a server, as there is currently no offline support.

Honorable Mentions

Facebook Camera

Facebook gave everyone a surprise yesterday, as they released their own camera app, despite buying out Instagram only a month ago.

The new app allows you to view all of your friend’s photos on the popular social network, and you will have your own device’s photos appearing at the top for easy uploading. Additionally, you can snap a photo directly from the app as well.

The biggest thing about the app that you can’t find in the official Facebook app or Instagram is the fact that you can upload multiple photos at a time. For many, this is a huge deal. Events happen all the time, and it’s annoying to have to upload those photos one-by-one from the iPhone. Now, you can upload them all at once.

Facebook Camera also features a cropping option, and you can apply one of several filters to your photo to make it “artsy.” The app will upload photos up to 2048x2048 in resolution.

Vinyl Tap

Relive the good old days of music with Vinyl Tap! This app will play your iPad’s music in a beautifully rendered digital turntable.

There are two different turntables to choose from: “andBoom T–800” or “andBoom T–1000.” The first one is like the analog record players that were popular decades ago, while the second is a more modernized look.

The best thing about the app is the fact that you can actually flip the records, just like the real thing! Each album that you select gets split into two halves, each having about five or six songs, so you flip it once it’s done with one side. Another feature that makes this app even closer to the real thing is that it recognizes records by their speed (45 or 33 1/3 RPMs).

Our own Lory Gil calls this “the best turntable simulator I've used on the iPad, hands-down.” Make sure to check it out yourself in the App Store for $1.99.
