When Halfbrick Studious launched Fruit Ninja in the App Store a couple of years ago, little did it know for sure that the game would go on to become the mobile arcade phenomenon that it is today. In light of this realization, the Australia-based developer is coming out with a massive Fruit Ninja update in celebration of the game’s second anniversary.
On its official YouTube channel, Halfbrick, which also has Jetpack Joyride and Monster Dash under its black belt, has posted a rather delightful video teasing the new additions to the hit fruit slicing game. The highlight of the video, which is embedded below, is the welcoming of two new characters named Gutsu and Truffles. Gutsu, a traveling merchant, and Truffles, his porky pal, meet the wise Sensei to present him with new fruits from their cart. Chief among these is the Starfruit.

Starfruit is the newly adopted virtual currency of Fruit Ninja. You can use Starfruit to purchase power-ups and super fruits from Gutsu and Truffles’ in-game cart. One power-up you can take advantage of is the bomb deflect, which supposedly gets rid of the otherwise deadly melon-shaped explosives in the game. Speaking of explosives, you can blast your way through the game with some booming berries. In addition to berries, time-extending peaches are also available from your Starfruit-powered super fruit depot.
Fruit Ninja for iPhone and Fruit Ninja HD for iPad are available in the App Store for $0.99 apiece. Both versions are set to be updated with the aforementioned appetizing additions on May 24. Seemingly timed to coincide with the release of Zynga’s Fruit Ninja-like game Zombie Swipeout, the update appears to be Halfbrick’s way of showing players who’s boss — or sensei, as it were — in the highly competitive arena of arcade slashers. Which slicing side are you on?
