Is The New Ultralingua Dictionary The Ultimate Dictionary App For iOS?

August 17, 2012
Ultralingua has been developing dictionary apps for iOS since 2008. They’ve been able to come up with a comprehensive “Dictionary and Verbs” series across various languages, including, believe it or not, Esperanto. But now Ultralingua is promising to deliver the dictionary app to end all dictionary apps. Enter: Ultralingua Dictionary for iOS. Said to have been the result of a partnership with none other than Apple, Ultralingua Dictionary is, according to its eponymous developer, “the single most amazing language reference app that’s ever hit the App Store.” Well, having tried its key features, I can say that it may very well be just that. The new Ultralingua Dictionary boasts a super smart search function. With it, the app is able to figure out what you’re looking for even if you yourself don’t know exactly what it is. The app’s search bar can handle misspelled words, entries in either language, and related words. As well, it can return text results for number searches. If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. Another major selling point of Ultralingua Dictionary is its handling of verbs. If you type any form of a verb into the search bar, the app will give you the definitions of the infinitive form. Then, you can view all of that verb’s conjugations, including their translations. Ultralingua Dictionary also supports favoriting of entries for quick reference and adjusting of font style and size. Ultralingua Dictionary for iOS is available now in the App Store for free. Free to try, that is. You can pick any dictionary to try for free. And if you want to unlock the full dictionary, you can do so through a $9.99 in-app purchase if it’s a single-language dictionary or a $19.99 in-app purchase if it’s a dual-language one. There are also a couple of single-language thesauri available for $4.99 each. Now, if you’re a first-time Ultralingua user, the new app’s pricing scheme may not be bad at all. But if you’ve been using any or all of Ultralingua’s existing dictionaries, you may be up in arms about having to upgrade to the new Ultralingua Dictionary for a number of additional fees.
