This Week In Accessories: Charge!

August 17, 2012
Welcome back to This Week in Accessories, where we’ll be highlighting some of the most interesting and innovative companions for your iOS device that hit the market this week. Let's get started.

F1

Taking its styling cues from a well-known Italian racecar, the F1 case for the new iPad and iPad 2 is sporty to say the least. Clad with a jet-black leather cover with red stitching and a red leather interior, the folio-type case allows a user to adjust their tablet to a wide variety of angles – including viewing and typing. The case also features automatic on-and-off capability and weighs in at less than a pound. The F1 is available at both Amazon and Acase for a very reasonable $39.90.

Universal Charge/Sync Cable and USB Travel Power Kit

I always hate packing my electronic gear when I travel. Along with the usual iOS charging cable, I always need to haul another micro-USB cable to charge other non-Apple devices. But Bracketron has devised a simple solution in its Universal Charge/Sync Cable and Universal USB Travel Power Kit. The charge and sync cable is 3-foot-long and can charge both a 30-pin and micro-USB device at the same time. It can be connected directly to a computer or used in conjunction with a USB adapter. The travel kit adds in a wall and car charger. The sync cable is $19.95 while the power kit is $39.95. And while that’s a little higher than some sync cables, having a combined solution might be worth it for people like me.

PowerSkin Battery Cases

XPAL Power has taken the wraps off its newly revamped PowerSkin battery case for the iPhone 4/4S. Available in glossy black or a limited-edition titanium color, the 1,500 mAh battery provides up to 200 more hours of standby and five hours of talk time. The one piece soft case slides on easily and features a set of LED lights on the back of the case to display charging status. An included cable allows users to sync while recharging as well. The new PowerSkin can be purchased directly through the company’s website for $69.99. Our own Jamie Young recently reviewed the old version of the battery case and liked the solution. The battery lights are probably the most welcome improvement in the revamped version.

Don’t worry, we’ll have much more for you soon, especially after the Sept. 12 announcement of the new iPhone and maybe even the rumored iPad mini. Some companies, like Spigen SGP, are already selling and shipping “iPhone 5” accessories. The early bird gets the worm, I guess.
