AppAdvice App Of The Week For September 17, 2012

September 17, 2012

Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!

Clipboard for clipboard.com

Alright folks, it’s Monday, so you should get some apps that definitely help you be more productive during the workweek. Fortunately, there is Clipboard for clipboard.com, a fantastic iOS app that compliments a great clipping service. Don’t forget important things online with Clipboard.com.

So what is Clipboard.com? It’s a service that gives you tools in your web browser to clip regions or entire web pages for referencing later (bookmarking). If you try the extension or bookmarklet in Safari or Chrome (or your browser of choice), it’s pretty neat. Hover over a chunk of text or an image to automatically select the region, and add more or take less from your selection. Clippings get tagged for easy referral later, and your clippings can be seen by other users, which can lead to great discovery and sharing of Web clippings.

Last week, the official app for iPhone was released, making it easier than ever to access your clips, as well as those who you have subscribed to. Users can even add three types of clips from the app: HTML, Bookmark, or Text. Even though the app does not work exactly like the browser bookmarklet, users can grab any text or image with the pasteboard and add it as a new clipping in Clipboard. This is not restricted to just mobile Safari either — you can copy anything from any app that allows it. It captures the content, so text, images, links, and whatever else.

The app also features some nice discovery features, such as the suggested user list, and the explore view, which can spark some inspiration, in case you need to figure out how to use Clipboard.com effectively.

I tend to think of the service as a mix of Pinterest, Delicious, and a bit of Evernote. It’s definitely useful and handy to have if you have ever wanted to save some snippets from the Internet. Make sure to give it the service a try — it’s free — and download the iPhone app today.

I reviewed Clipboard for clipboard.com last Friday, so make sure to check that out for more information.

Honorable Mention

Birthday Box

Most of us probably have Facebook, but even though you get reminded of someone’s birthday on the day of, it’s not very useful if you don’t check Facebook that often. Fortunately, Birthday Box is an app that can give you a hand.

Birthday Box will require you to be logged in to your Facebook account, but you will be able to see all recent birthdays, as well as upcoming birthdays up to a month ahead. Users can even leave birthday messages on someone’s wall, and keep track of who you’ve already wished a happy birthday.

Of course, a real friend tries to get a gift as a surprise for someone — or at least that’s how it’s supposed to go. Don’t worry though, Birthday Box allows you to keep notes about each person in a separate section on their profile, and only you can see this, so it’s safe from prying eyes. Keep notes about their interests or sizes so you can reference it while shopping for the perfect gift!

A bonus of Birthday Box is the fact that you can also view your own birthday messages in the Inbox. See all of the birthday posts that you received this year, as well as prior years. It’s a great way to take a trip down memory lane.

With all of those wishes you’ll be making or receiving, you may want to keep templates of birthday greetings and thank you messages. This can be done right from Birthday Box, as well as setting up reminders to be notified of someone’s special day.

If you have ever needed some help keeping track with birthdays on Facebook, then this is a great app to help you out with that.

I originally reviewed Birthday Box last Tuesday, so check it out for more information.
