Just after Apple released a statement from CEO Tim Cook regarding the much-maligned new Maps in iOS 6, the company has created a new section in the App Store to highlight alternatives.

Entitled “Find maps for your iPhone,” the section lists 13 apps from third-party sources:

Prices for the selected apps range from free to $49.99.

Cook, in his open letter this morning, mentioned some of the alternatives in the section. But it’s nice to see Apple highlighting some other choices. We also took a look at some other alternatives this week.

You can find the section on an iOS device by clicking on the Featured tab in the App Store. The list is also available on iTunes.

And if you’re waiting for a stand-alone Google Maps app for iOS 6, be prepared to use some patience. News this week said that Google is indeed working on an app, but it may be a few months before it appears in the App Store.
