Chew On This: Gumulon Is An iOS Arcade Game Controlled By Tapping Or ... Chewing?
There's something odd about the newly released iOS game Gumulon. Nope, it's not the game's premise, which concerns an alien miner named Ace trying to escape from a ravenous subterranean monster. Rather, I'm referring to the game's control scheme, which works either by tapping or by chewing. Yup, you read that right: chewing. You can choose to play Gumulon in tap mode, in which you just have to tap on your device's screen to make Ace jump. But you can also choose to play the game in chew-tracking mode, in which you have to chew, preferably on a gum, to do the same action. Actually, Gumulon is brought to us by Mondelez Global, the owner of the popular Stride chewing gum brand. I've been able to play the game in chew-tracking mode even without a chewing gum, but Mondelez Global apparently hopes that players play Gumulon while chewing on a Stride gum. If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. Gumulon uses your device's front camera to detect chewing motions on your face when playing in chew-tracking mode, which, as expected, is harder to master than tap mode. Note, though, that chew-tracking mode rewards you with double points as you collect guminium crystals and rescue your alien friends. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later, Gumulon is available now in the App Store for free. The game works only in tap mode on iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch. Its chew-tracking mode works only on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, fifth-generation iPod touch, iPad 2, third-generation iPad, fourth-generation iPad, and iPad mini. Gumulon also lets you compete with your Game Center friends via Game Center, share your #ChewFace, and unlock special features by winning achievements or scanning barcodes on packs of Stride.
