Popular Email App Mailbox Adds Support For Portrait Orientation On iPad

June 18, 2013
Last month, the popular email app Mailbox finally made the jump to iPad, over three months after being optimized for iPhone and iPod touch only. Mailbox for iPad arrived with the same look and signature swipe-based triaging system of its original iPhone counterpart. But for some reason, it was launched as a landscape-only iPad app. Well, a new update has just been issued to the app, and it remedies that limitation by adding portrait support for iPad. With the new version of Mailbox, you're no longer forced to use the app on your iPad or iPad mini in landscape mode only. Now you can use it in portrait mode as well, with the sidebar menu, the inbox panel, and the message view sliding in to and out of view for optimal display. Also containing unspecified bug fixes, the new version of Mailbox is available now in the App Store for free. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later. If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. Released last February, Mailbox was reviewed here on AppAdvice as "the best email client that you can get at this time, especially if you use Gmail." The app famously (infamously?) launched with a reservation system that put interested users in a virtual waitlist. But that reservation system was finally pulled down in mid-April, a month after Mailbox was acquired by Dropbox. Note that the app remains exclusive to Gmail users only. But Mailbox developer Orchestra has said that support for other email services are coming to the app. Mac and Android versions of the app are also expected to be released in the coming months.
