One Of Britain's Most Challenging Hiking Routes Gets Its Own iPhone App

September 12, 2013
One of the most challenging - yet beautiful - hiking routes in the British Isles now has its own iPhone app. Called Three Peaks Yorkshire, the application provides iDevice users with information relating to the "Yorkshire Three Peaks" challenge: a famous series of routes located in the historic county of Yorkshire, which span the peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough, and Pen-y-ghent in the Pennine range (and is not to be confused with the "National Three Peaks"). The app, however, is incredibly important for would-be hikers. Out in the countryside of Yorkshire, a strong cellular data network is a rare occurrence. Because Three Peaks Yorkshire offers most of its information preinstalled, users don't need to rely on cellular coverage in order to access the text, images, and - most importantly - Ordnance Survey maps offered by the application. Though hikers should of course never leave home without their compass and paper maps, Three Peaks Yorkshire can complement this essential equipment, and may also help in planning one's trip. As the application's developer explains:
On the app you will find descriptions and OS 1:50,000 maps for the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge route, plus alternative routes up each of the Three Peaks. There are route descriptions and OS maps showing suggested mountain bike routes around each of the peaks too. In addition we have packed the app with geolocated places of interest (POIs) which range from archaeological sites through to nature reserves so you can discover even more about the area when you visit. There are also stunning 360° panoramas from the summits; an augmented reality "toposcope" for each of the three peaks; advice on what to wear and what equipment to bring; information on travel, accommodation and places to eat plus lots of ways of sharing your experiences online and for challenging yourself and your mates.
Indeed, Three Peaks Yorkshire is full to the brim with useful information, and it's clearly a must-have for anyone planning to take on the hiking challenge in the near future. Below, we've included a gallery of screenshots taken from within the application. For more general information on Yorkshire itself, we'd recommend the Yorkshire Dales National Park's official website. Three Peaks Yorkshire can be downloaded in the App Store for $2.99 (£1.99), and it's optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch.
