Readability 2.0 Unveils New iOS 7 Design Plus New Recommendations Feature

January 23, 2014
My favorite read-later app has just been redesigned for iOS 7. At the same time, it has been updated with a highly recommended, if not exactly highly requested, new feature. I'm referring to Readability, which has just gone 2.0 with a new iOS 7-style design along with a new Recommendations feature. As you might expect, Readability's built-from-the-ground-up iOS 7 design refresh is all about flatness and simplicity. But it also boasts some nice interface touches, including neat animations and gestures for navigation. Along with the new design, Readability 2.0 features Recommendations, a more social replacement for the app's Top Reads section. As noted by the Readability team:
Recommendations are a way to share and discover a single thing: written content published on the Web. They allow you to read an article and then say, “Hey, this article is great. It’s worth your time and here’s what I think about it.” They also allow you to see what articles other folks think are worthy of your time and attention.
To get started with Recommendations, you have to follow at least one of the users suggested by Readability. (There appears to be no way yet to search for particular users to follow.) You can then find the articles recommended by the users you follow in Readability's new Recommended list. Of course, other users can choose to follow you as well to see your own Recommendations on their Recommended lists. To create a Recommendation, tap the "broadcast" icon in the options menu for an article, share what you think about the article, and tap Recommend. Your followers can then either read it right away or save it for later. Note that in addition to the Recommended list and the good old Reading List (which contains all of the articles you've saved for later), there's also the new Profile tab in Readability 2.0. This shows your Readability profile page, with sections for your followers, users you follow, and your recommended articles. It also includes an option that lets you edit the name, bio, and email for your profile. Also featuring improved speed, reliability, and syncing, Readability 2.0 is available now in the App Store for free. It's compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later.
