Cydia Tweak: Athena 2 Brings Winterboard-Free Icon Tinting To iOS 7

February 27, 2014

One of the Cydia Store's popular app icon tinting packages, Athena, has been rebuilt from the ground up for iOS 7 and 64-bit iOS devices. Called Athena 2, the new jailbreak tweak can be downloaded in the Cydia Store for $0.99, and it's optimized for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Once you've got Athena 2 installed on your jailbroken iOS device, you can begin tinting iOS app icons from within the built-in Settings application. Here, Athena 2 adds a new preferences pane, and colored tints can be applied to icons without the need for a respring (let alone a reboot).

You can use multiple colors to tint icons, and separate intensities (for individual iOS app icons) can also be adjusted. Best of all, though, the jailbreak tweak doesn't require “bulky Winterboard themes” to be bundle-installed, as Athena's developer explains. If you've been looking for a simple package that can alter the appearance of app icons, this could be it.

For all-round iOS customization, however, a handful of alternatives are available in the Cydia Store, too. Besides Jay Freeman's Winterboard (which allows users to install themes on an iOS device), Filippo Bigarella's Springtomize 3 – which is available for $2.99 – makes it possible for users to toggle a wide variety of iOS elements.

Athena 2, on the other hand, can be downloaded in the Cydia Store for $0.99.
