Today's Best App: Word Forward

March 15, 2014
The App Store takes delivery of hundreds of new apps per day. The overwhelming scene makes it possible to easily overlook an exciting game, valuable productivity suite, etc. However, we have a solution. Today’s Best Apps tackles this problem by providing you with a handpicked and tested list of apps that are truly worth your consideration each and everyday. Remember: Even though in-app purchases typically require your iTunes Store password for processing, you can further prevent them and other unauthorized actions by enabling local restrictions using the passcode locked iOS parental controls

Universal:

Word Forward by AppyNation Ltd. (Free, 25.1 MB): Say hello to the Chess of word games and break the blitz-style boredom. Rather than just requiring you to whip out the longest words you can recall, this vocabulary-based puzzler requires thinking ahead to succeed because the goal is zero. That's correct, you want the final score to include no, or at least the fewest, points. As you'll soon see, unlike similarly looking challenges, the 5-by-5 grid board in Word Forward doesn't get replenished after building a valid word and each elimination reduces the score. The most problematic part, indeed, being the lack of replacement tiles, a situation that creates undesired separations, or gaps. Thankfully, some magical tools are offered, such as the ability to swap and move pieces, but in limited supply, so utilize them only as a last resort. The game features beautifully minimalistic 2-D and 3-D graphics, rousing techno soundtrack, 125 stage solo campaign spanning five levels of difficulty as well as a single round turn-based multiplayer via Game Center, plus an interactive background where every tap and swipe creates a fun rippling water effect.
