The Twelve South HoverBar 3 Review

May 27, 2014
Twelve South has been making accessories exclusively for Apple products since 2009. The company’s newest product, the HoverBar 3, provides new ways to make the most of your iPad and iPad mini.

The Facts

  • Company Name: Twelve South
  • Product Name: HoverBar 3
  • Price: $99.99
  • Compatibility: Works will every iPad ever produced, except the original
  • Website: twelvesouth.com
  • Date Reviewed: May 27, 2014

The Basics

What Is It? As its name implies, this is a third-generation device. The only difference between the HoverBar 3 and previous models is that it is compatible with the iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina display. It also ships with a kickstand for the first time, which creates a handy tabletop display. Integration With The Device The HoverBar 3 is essentially a clamp, a 22-inch flexible arm, and a holder for your iPad. It attaches onto the L-shaped stand for your iMac or other Apple display. You can also attach the Hoverbar 3 to your desk, or anywhere else that’s an inch or less thick. Once your iPad is mounted, it can be displayed at any angle. Accessories The HoverBar comes with three interchangeable iPad Fit Clips; one for the iPad Air, one for the iPad mini, and one for the iPad 2, iPad 3, or iPad 4. It also comes with a kickstand, as mentioned above.

Use and feel

Unlike other Twelve South products, the HoverBar 3 wasn’t designed to make your work space look more beautiful. Instead, it helps to remove some of the clutter by causing the iPad to “float” alongside your iMac, or above your desk. The flexible arm is durable, as is the clamp. Unfortunately, the iPad clip connector is less so because it is made of plastic. If you don’t attach the iPad as directed, it could fall off. It is essential to read and follow the handy install guide and user manual. The Good The HoverBar 3 is flexible and because it works with multiple iPad models, extremely versatile. The instruction manual is easy to understand and includes valuable tips and tricks that will guarantee that your HoverBar 3 will last a long time. The accessory works with Apple’s Smart Cover, but does not work with shells or cases that add bulk to the back of the iPad. The Bad The iPad clip connector is made of plastic, which could prove problematic over time. During my limited tests, however, I didn’t experience a problem. It is not recommended to use the HoverBar 3 with the current-generation 21-inch iMac because of its thinness. This combination, according to Twelve South’s FAQ page, can become unstable. In this case, you’re advised to connect your HoverBar 3 to your desk or a nearby shelf.
