Facebook Reportedly Set To Officially Launch Snapchat Rival Slingshot Tomorrow

June 17, 2014
Facebook is reportedly set to officially launch its new Slingshot app tomorrow, June 17. The Snapchat-like messaging app became available in the App Store last week, but only briefly. True to its "ephemeral" nature, the app was promptly pulled by Facebook after an apparently premature rollout. But as reported by 9to5Mac, Slighshot is set to be released for real tomorrow. According to the site's source, though, Facebook could still hold back on the launch should last-minute issues arise. We'll know for sure tomorrow and we'll certainly let you know once it becomes officially available. Slingshot will be free on the App Store, like Facebook's other apps. Slingshot is so named because it requires recipients to "sling" a shot, i.e. a photo or a video, back to senders in order to view messages. It's Facebook's new take on a Snapchat competitor following its failed Poke app. Last week, Facebook Messenger was itself updated with a Snapchat-like feature in the form of tap-and-hold video sending. Earlier today, Facebook updated its flagship iPad app and Paper app with new features and improvements.
