A Samsung Galaxy S 5 takes the ALS ice bucket challenge, mocks the iPhone 5s

August 22, 2014

By now, you’ve probably heard about the ice bucket challenge, a viral campaign to raise money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. In recent weeks, many in the technology community have taken the challenge, including Apple’s Tim Cook and Phil Schiller, and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. Those who take the plunge get to challenge three other people to do the same within the next 24 hours. If they don’t, they are asked to donate to the ALS foundation.

Samsung is now getting involved, and using the opportunity to bash Apple’s iPhone for what seems like the millionth time.

On the latest video posted to Samsung’s Mobile UK YouTube channel, a Galaxy S 5 takes the challenge, and then nominates the iPhone 5s, HTC One M8, and the Nokia Lumia 930. Unlike the other phones, the Galaxy S 5 can be submerged in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes.

Some might find this ad inappropriate, given the subject matter. I find it cheesy, at best.

On a positive note, Samsung does urge people to donate to the Motor Disease Association.
