The popular mobile payment company Square has gone international with its free point-of-sale app, Square Register.

To be sure, Square’s card processing service remains available in the U.S., Canada, and Japan only. But Square Register has been opened up to allow independent businesses around the world to use the app’s sales and inventory management tools

Square Register for iPhone and iPad is now available worldwide in English, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Also, it now supports 130 internationally recognized currencies.

As reported by Re/code, “A spokeswoman said the global software rollout could help Square decide in which new countries it will start offering its credit card reader and processing service.”

In addition to international availability, Square Register for iPad has been updated with support for selling and redeeming gift cards, which can be ordered with custom designs from the Square Dashboard on the Web.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later, Square Register is available on the App Store for free.

Earlier this week, Square also made news as one half of a partnership that enabled the Snapcash peer-to-peer money transfer feature in the popular ephemeral messaging app Snapchat.
