Watch Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak demo SPG Keyless using his iPhone 6

December 3, 2014

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak gave an off-the-cuff demonstration of SPG Keyless using the SPG app on his iPhone 6 during his recent visit to the W Hollywood Hotel.

Launched last month, SPG Keyless is the Bluetooth-powered mobile keyless entry system of Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) loyalty program, allowing guests to enter their rooms using their smartphones as keys. It’s currently available at 10 select Aloft, Element and W Hotels around the world.

At the W Hollywood Hotel, Wozniak aka “Woz” agreed to show off the ease of use of SPG Keyless on camera. Take a look:

As noted by Re/code:

Wozniak slips comfortably into demo mode, holding his iPhone so it is visible to the camera as he walks the viewer through the process — first launching the SPG app, then touching his iPhone to the door lock and waiting (for long seconds) until the green light on the lock flashes the okay. With a click of the latch, he enters the hotel room — then abruptly turns to the camera and flashes a broad smile.

SPG Keyless enables SPG members to bypass the front desk at hotels (except in regions where identification needs to be presented) and go directly to their rooms. They just have to register their smartphones through the SPG app and allow push notifications. After booking reservations at Starwood’s keyless hotels, they are invited to opt in to SPG Keyless.

In other Woz-related news, the charismatic tech pioneer has been reported to be creating a reality TV show about future technology with Kari Byron of Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters” fame. Rumor also has it that he’s going to be portrayed in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming Steve Jobs biopic by the “Superbad” comedian Seth Rogen.
