Pushpin for Pinboard gets updated to version 4.0 with offline downloading and other improvements

It’s a big day for Lionheart Software, the developers behind the popular Pinboard app, Pushpin, as they push out 4.0 to the masses on May 19, 2015.

For those who are unfamiliar with Pinboard, it is a social bookmarking site that was made for people who value privacy and speed. Pinboard has zero ads and no third-party tracking, and is available for a small annual fee that starts at $11 a year. The service has a robust API that allows plenty of developers to make some great apps for the service, with Pushpin being a favorite among many.

I joined Pinboard back in 2013, and have acquired a collection of useful links in my account that I like to refer back to often, so the money I paid then (before it was an annual fee) has been put to good use. It’s super handy to have my bookmarks with me all the time (not just limited to one browser), and accessible from anywhere. I’ve gone through several different Pinboard apps on iOS, but I always kept coming back to PushPin because it is well designed, intuitive to use, and had extensive features that just get better with time. In the significant 4.0 update, Pushpin brings a ton of new features and even some bug fixes.

The biggest new addition is the option for complete offline downloading and reading of webpages and article text, eliminating the need to be connected to view content. Users can have the app download everything in the background so it’s ready for you when you’re on the subway, airport, or anywhere else where you won’t have a connection.

Saved searches are getting better treatment in the update, as they now have prominent front-and-center placement in the main sidebar. If you access a saved search often, you can even set one as the default view when the app is launched.

All bookmarks will now show the date that they were added, in case you’ve been itching to know. Pushpin’s extension will set the description to any text you have highlighted in Safari, eliminating a step in the bookmark saving process.

Bug fixes for Pushpin 4.0 include faster tag editing, speed improvements for the regular and read later extensions, better tag suggestions, hidden search bar when browsing, and much more. For a full change log of everything that the 4.0 update brings to the table, click here.

I’ve been testing out the latest version for the past few days, and I am happy with it so far. If you’re serious about your Pinboard bookmarks, then I highly recommend checking out Pushpin.

Pushpin for Pinboard 4.0 is an update that is available for free for existing customers. New users can get Pushpin on the App Store as a universal download for $9.99.
