A New Rumor Focuses on Improved 'iPhone 8' Water Resistance

The next-generation iPhone is shaping up to be a big upgrade in more ways than one. According to a new report from The Korea Herald, the iPhone 8 water resistance will be taking a step up to IP68 certified.

The highest possible level

The highest possible level

If the handset was IP68 certified, that means that iPhone could handle being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. Currently, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are both IP67 rated and can withstand immersion in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. And previous torture tests have shown that the handsets can even survive after taking a swim in hot coffee, soda, and the ocean.

Not the same report says Samsung’s next major smartphone – the Galaxy S8 will also be IP68 rated.

“Apple’s iPhone 8 will feature the IP68 rating protection as part of drastic upgrades marking the 10th anniversary of the iPhone this year,” an industry source told The Investor on condition of anonymity.

Ironically, even though the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are IP67 rated, Apple doesn’t cover any liquid damage under the normal warranty.
