Epic Odyssey is an Open World Hero-Collecting RPG with a Killer Art Style

July 26, 2020

We love a hero-collecting mobile RPG as much as the next guy, but they can be repetitive.

That’s why it’s great to see a bit of innovation and variety in the genre, and Epic Odyssey definitely delivers. Developed by Vietnamese studio Hiker Games, it’s a huge, colorful strategy RPG with a Breath of the Wild-esque art-style and a truly open world to explore.

It has a welcome emphasis on accessibility, too, with streamlined combat and plenty of idle features.

Epic Odyssey sees you battling with formations of five heroes belonging to three different factions and three classes. These 3D heroes all look gorgeous, with high fantasy designs and clean, cartoony artwork.

They’re full of personality, too, expressed through neat animations, fascinating backstories, and punchy passages of dialogue as you make your way through the game’s main campaign.

Epic Odyssey is a gacha game, and all of the features you’ve come to expect are here. You can merge duplicates, use low-tier heroes to fuel more valuable ones, use and upgrade skills, customize equipment, and all that jazz.

But the thing we really like in Epic Odyssey is the world map. Unlike most gacha RPGs, where you just progress from node to node, Epic Odyssey has a sprawling environment that you can explore, finding chests, picking up quests, and so on.

It’s a bit like a Diablo-style action-RPG in these sections, which also feature a spot of gentle puzzling. Epic Odyssey is based in the Lynea Continent, which has thirty kingdoms – brimming with mythical beings, ancient treasures, and richly drawn NPCs with their own stories to tell.

And you can be as engaged as you like at any given moment. Epic Odyssey encourages exploration and rolling up your sleeves in battle, but if you’ve got boring life stuff to do you can activate the game’s idle features and grow stronger while you’re AFK.

Epic Odyssey looks like the next great gacha RPG, and you can download it for free right now on the App Store and Google Play.
