Have you ever been conscious of the flow of materials on a global scale?
This book “Earth: Materials for Design ―― Design x Science Dialogue” propose a new look at manufacturing within this grand flow of time from both aspects of design and science.
The main contents of this book are an animation conveying the basic concept of materials, an introduction to metals, plastic, and wood with many visuals and data, and their use from now on based on talks by three scientists, and an introduction to the works proposed by the 11 groups of designers. It is hoped that the book will be carefully read right through to the epilogue and that it will help people engaged in manufacturing, people who use things, and indeed all people to realize once again the real nature of materials created by the Earth.

*This book was compiled with some additional editing on the basis of the content of the “Earth-Materials for Design” project held at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), in 2010, Japan. This project was a compound event to think about the use of materials from now on through dialogue between scientists and designers on study meetings and an exhibition.
