GCF Vocabulary Videos

This Vocabulary Dictionary uses short video clips to explore the most common words in the English language. Learners see and hear words used in a variety of situations, from very serious to laugh-out-loud funny. Particularly useful for visual and auditory learners.

In the GCF Vocabulary Dictionary, everyday words are defined through the use of animations, situations, and guided imagery that help promote comprehension. The learner hears the word read aloud, hears the word used in sentences and paragraphs, and views film and images that define the word.

The goal of the GCF Vocabulary Dictionary is to help adults at all levels become more proficient readers. Originally created to assist native-English speaking adults in literacy proficiency, these videos are also ideal for learning English as a second language. As these videos are tailored to an adult audience, they use realistic imagery and situations; the GCF Vocabulary Dictionary may not be appropriate for use in literacy education with younger populations.

This video dictionary is a part of GCFLearnFree.org's adult Reading Program. Our Reading Program is designed to expose learners to the 1,000 most common words in the English language in order to improve adult literacy and English-language learning. Utilizing various educational tools, learners can explore the sounds of letters and words, see images and videos of words, and practice matching words and sounds. Everything is self-paced and self-directed so that students can choose to focus on the areas that are most important and relevant to learn.
