Buchenwald Memorial Official Multimedia Guide

In 1937, the Nazis built the Buchenwald Concentration Camp near Weimar, the home of Weimar Classicism. When the Second World War ended in 1945, Buchenwald was the largest concentration camp in Germany, containing a total of 250,000 prisoners from all across Europe. Afterwards, the Soviet occupying power used the site for one of its Special Camps. When the Special Camp was dissolved in early 1950, East Germany erected a National Monument on the site. Today, more than almost any other memorial site, Buchenwald represents the chequered history of Germany and Europe.

This app allows you to customise your tour of the Buchenwald Memorial and the former camp site. The app provides extensive insights into 27 key historical locations and includes original images from the Memorial's comprehensive digital image archive. In addition, former camp inmates give contemporary witness reports of the terrible conditions they experienced.

This app functions both as an interactive travel guide for the location as well as a source of general information on the Memorial's history.

This multimedia guide was designed by the Buchenwald Memorial in cooperation with itour city guide GmbH. More details at www.buchenwald.de and www.itour.de.
