‘All the world’s a stage’ said Shakespeare

Now Inferno21 brings this to reality with a theatrical re-imagining of Dante’s Inferno using ground-breaking Augmented Reality ‘Portals’ technology.

On the 700th anniversary of his death, and through the characters of Dante, Virgil and Beatrice, Users are transported through Portals from everyday reality to a hellish ‘virtual dimension’ featuring a stage performance that re-imagines Dante’s masterpiece for the world of social media.

The 7 Deadly Sins of the original text are presented as common online behaviours (Envy, Rage, Lust, etc.), while the ‘contrapasso’ (consequences) of such behaviours reflect those real-life consequences organically experienced within Social Media, as well as the broader evolution of modern, societal Values.

Using a unique blend of next-generation Portaliser Augmented Reality (AR) technology, combined with GPS location software and 360 degree surround video, the person uses their mobile phone to ‘navigate' through a virtual ‘Portal’ to find themselves on the main stage of the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, where they will be standing in the middle of the unfolding action.

How to Enjoy ‘Inferno21’

Use the ‘Find’ button to locate your nearest Portals featuring the 9 scenes from Inferno21.

Once you are at this location, your screen will change from Map to Camera, using Augmented Reality to display the exact spot where the first Portal can be found.

Simply pass your phone through each portal within the Show, and the scene will begin - rotate your device to see the 360-degree performance. A signpost will then point you towards the next scene.

If there are currently no ‘Hosting’ locations near you, simply click ‘Host’ on the Menu as you walk through your local park, ‘pinning 9 locations’ about 10 meters apart – one for each scene. These will now host the show in your own name, and you can now access the content for free once you share the locations with your friends via Social.

Important: whether Finding or Hosting, remains alert at all times and be sure to consider the safety of yourself and others while viewing or pinning Portals!

About the Play:

This Play was selected by the Lyric Theatre as a part of their FSNI-supported ‘Live to Digital’ development initiative, supporting emerging Playwriters and illustrating how digital technology could enhance the theatre experience

“My jaw hit the floor, and I was gob-smacked at the immense possibilities of these portals!”, said Jimmy Fay, Executive Producer and Artistic Director of Lyric Theatre, Belfast.

”I wanted to create a theatrical experience that would shake up people’s opinion of theatre, while capitalising on new technology to engage younger audiences” said Austin. “I was bowled over by the potential of the Portals to tell stories, and like radio contributes to building the audience at an artist’s live music shows, I hope in turn that this App will motivate people to attend Live Theatre in person in the future”.

Portaliser.com is a new Irish technology, initially developed to build capacity for artists while venues went dark, but also, to create a taster for ‘experiences’ that the customer cannot yet attend ‘in the flesh’.
