App Store Description

iPrescribe exercise is a free, medically endorsed and evidence-based app which produces a personalised 12-week exercise prescription plan to improve your fitness and help you manage a variety of conditions, from osteoarthritis to diabetes.

The app provides a tailored plan based on your personal data and health inputs, as well as any medical conditions you may have. The personalised plan will gradually increase until you are meeting the recommended level of activity, while setting the exercise intensity and duration based on your health, age and current level of fitness.

Physical activity plays an important role in the management of several long term health conditions and it can also help those who are sedentary or at risk from developing long term health problems.

Exercise safely and at your own pace:

IPrescribe Exercise has been developed by chartered physiotherapists who are experts in exercise prescription. Patient safety and care is of paramount importance. We have included pre-exercise health screening to assess suitability, and we ask you to input specific health data to determine your risk profile. We have carefully designed exercise programmes, which you will rate based on the exertion you experience, and you can monitor your heart rate with the built-in heart rate monitor. We have also included the precautions and contraindications you should look out for when exercising, which are specific to any medical condition you may have. We have a range of optional objective measures, such as blood pressure, blood glucose level, mood rating, pain score, lung function tests etc that you can record to monitor the effect that exercise is having on your health. You can complete a validated 6-minute walking test. You will also have the option to send a report to your healthcare practitioner.

Exercise Programmes:

Increasing your activity levels will unlock a range of health benefits but it's important to realise that even a small increase can be beneficial. You may for example decide to get off the bus one stop early so that you can walk a little further than usual.

You can carry out your daily exercise in multiple short sessions with rest in between if you would like. Our timer function allows you to pause and restart your exercise when you are ready. You can also choose to do whatever type of exercise you wish, we have GPS walking, running and cycling programmes, gym programmes and a home aerobics programme built in to the App, and you can input any other type of exercise be it group exercise classes, swimming, sports activities etc.

At the end of the programme it is hoped that you will be meeting the current government guidelines of 5 x 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week, or 3 x 25 minutes of high intensity activity per week.

Effects of exercise on long term health conditions:

We have built in exercise programmes for 20 of the most common long term diseases. The effects of exercise on health are well known and there is a huge amount of published medical evidence to support this. Benefits include:

* decreased blood pressure
* decreased resting heart rate
* improved lung function
* improved insulin function/sensitivity
* decreased cholesterol levels
* decreased weight
* decreased pain/improved function
* improved health related quality of life
* improved mood
* improved sleep

If you suffer from a chronic long term condition such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or cardiovascular disease for example, regular activity will help you to manage your condition, in some cases it can be more effective than medicine.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
