• Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs, sometimes denoted LGBTQ+) have disproportionately high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, substance use, and physical health problems

Sanchez Research Lab

by The University of Utah

What is it about?

• Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs, sometimes denoted LGBTQ+) have disproportionately high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, substance use, and physical health problems. Previous research has posited “minority stress” as the primary cause of SGM health disparities, but exposure to minority stressors (such as discrimination, denigration, and victimization) does not consistently predict physical health issues in SGM populations, thus suggesting that our understanding of the health effects of stigma remains incomplete. To fill in that gap, we have designed this app in conjunction with our research study to investigate SGM perceived inclusion and safety.

• This app contains a questionnaire that consists of 43 questions. Of these, 20 questions have answers of “Yes” or “No”, six have a multiple-choice answer, 16 questions are on a Likert scale, and one question requires a short answer. Questions are meant to measure the person’s emotional state in their current location by asking about the environment, the other people there, and the user’s feelings about those things.

• Only enrolled study participants will be provided with a login to access the application. For more details on this research study and to potentially receive access to app features, please visit:

• This app collects survey responses and the user’s background location while logged in. This location is tracked as part of the research study to verify that users are in their reported location when they respond to the survey. This permission is required for survey use, but location tracking is disabled when the user signs out.
