The Blind Pig Niagara
What is it about?
The name Bling Pig is not new. It’s a century-old saying that dates back to the days of 1920s Prohibition, when the only booze available was bootlegged and controlled by the likes of Al Capone. When you wanted to throw back some bathtub gin or moonshine, the Blind Pig, more commonly known as a Speakeasy, was the place to do it. Urban legend gives two versions of where the phrase “Blind Pig” derives.

When you wanted to throw back some bathtub gin or moonshine, the Blind Pig, more commonly known as a Speakeasy, was the place to do it. Urban legend gives two versions of where the phrase “Blind Pig” derives.
One story says it was a blue-collar dive bar where the average Joe would drink, the ironworker, factory hand or farmer. The other story tells of an establishment where you’d have to pay an admission to enter and see an attraction, such as a blind pig. You’d receive a “complimentary” cup of alcohol, a clever loophole to the rules. While we think of the U.S. when we think of Prohibition, it was also in effect in Ontario between 1916 and 1927. So let’s raise a glass to the past and celebrate the Blind Pig.
